THE Labour Department has taken a strict stand against the trustees and management of H. J. Doshi Ghatkopar Hindu Sabha Hospital, located in Ghatkopar (West), Mumbai. Acting on a complaint filed by badli (temporary) workers, the Assistant Labour Commissioner, Mumbai Suburban (East), has issued an official notice to the hospital trust.
The notice has been issued on the basis of a complaint filed by Advocate Dr. Vedprakash Tiwari on behalf of the affected workers. It clearly directs the trustees of the hospital or their authorised representative to remain present without fail before the Assistant Labour Commissioner’s office on 21 January at 3:00 pm.
According to the complaint, the badli workers were engaged by the hospital from 2018 till April 2022, a period that included the extremely challenging phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite rendering continuous services, the workers have allegedly not been paid their pending wages, retrenchment/closure compensation, or other statutory service benefits even after the hospital was shut down.
Sources further revealed that some of the affected badli workers belong to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. In view of this, the alleged treatment of these workers may attract scrutiny not only under labour laws but also under other stringent legal provisions.
Commenting on the matter, Advocate Dr. Vedprakash Tiwari said, “This is not merely a case of unpaid wages. It is a question of the rights and dignity of workers who served during the COVID period. The trust will now have to answer before the law.”
